OK I am not going to repeat all the positive comments but rather would like to post a solution which I came across. OK so some people commented about losing or dropping wireless connections. Well it started to happen to me to. Now I am IT security professional and at first I was checking patches etc. Then I read a genius comment which is so simple and works. So here is the solution.Do the following (Windows 7)1) Go to Control Panal2) Choose Network and Sharing3) On the left hand side choose "Change Adapter Settings"4) Right click the Wireless Network Connection and choose properties (it is the last option)5) Choose the top option "Client for Microsoft Networks"6) Choose Configure on top7) Go to the Power Management Tab8) De-Select "Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power"Save and close.I did some additional analysis of this issue there is one additional step you need to do.9) Go to control panel and POWER OPTIONS10) The default is BALANCED - Choose CHANGE PLAN SETTINGS11) On the bottom choose CHANGE ADVANCED PLAN SETTINGS12) Scroll to WIRELESS ADAPTER SETTINGS and click the plus sign to the left of it to expand the options.13) Now click the second plus sign POWER SAVER MODE14) Click on the the battery option and a selection box will open set both battery and plugged in to MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE.Save and close all. This should solve the issue once and for all.What was happening the power saver option was shutting down the wireless adapter to save power thus the unreliable connections. If the connection is not constant it was shutting it down. The setting is effected by these two places.Problem solved :)Happy Computing
This laptop was a replacement for my Macbook, which had reached the end of its usable life. I decided not to buy another Mac, because I am having to spend an ever increasing amount of time remoting into my office computer (PC) with a new job I took last year, and this process is seamless from a PC->PC but not so much from a Mac->PC. I was pretty bummed about being forced to leave the Macbook world, but I'm pleased to report that I got the best of both worlds with the S3: an Apple-like physical experience on a Windows computer.Style -- The S3 is almost IDENTICAL to the Macbook Air, so I really wasn't forced to carry around an ugly PC like I'd feared. Are there some minor differences in styling between the two? Sure, but they're pretty darn close. I'm obsessive about design/style/looks, and I am very very happy with the styling of the S3.Durability -- The S3 is pretty solid. Unlike other ultrabooks that I looked at, the S3 is sturdy and not at all flimsy. I don't feel like I have to baby it.Portability -- WOW! I can't tell you how much I love the thin, lightweight design. Pictures don't do it justice; you need to feel it in your hands to fully appreciate how insanely easy it is to carry this thing around or let it rest in your lap.Performance -- I run a number of resource-intensive applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, Visual Studio, Skype, etc), and it handles them all effortlessly. Also, the SSD drive is definitely worth the money. Boot time is crazy fast, sleep restore is near instant (<1sec), and I love the silent operation w/ almost no lap heat.Overall -- Can't recommend this computer enough. I've always scoffed at PCs since converting to the Apple world, but this one won me back. I actually own a PC I'm proud of... never thought I'd say that considering my love for Apple products.
I got this laptop as a designer since I'm always showing clients and others my works. It's always handy to have when I need to mock something up and design on my laptop, on the spot, and in front of them.It's extremely fast, especially since Acer included it's "instant on" feature. My PC at home takes about 1 minute to load up before I can use it and start opening applications, on the contrary, this baby is on within seconds and ready to go. The core i7 processor also makes this a speed demon when you're opening up applications like photoshop, illustrator, indesign, or any CPU heavy applications you throw at it. It handles them all quick and easy unlike any other laptop I've ever used. The 240GB Solid State Drive or SSD is blazing fast, both read and write speeds. Large files can be transferred in seconds when before it may have taken minutes on another laptop with a standard 5400RPM or 7200RPM Hard drive. Though at only 240GB, you are limited. This isn't a laptop you'd store your entire music, movie, and entertainment collection onto. You can still fit a ton of stuff onto 240GB, but I'd install all necessary applications first, and then add the fun stuff for last so you know you have room on your hard drive.The speakers sound surprisingly good considering how thin and small the body is. They aren't anything amazing, but better than most laptops built in speakers. A cheap pair for 2.1 stereo speakers for home use would be a lot better though, especially if you listen to music or plan to watch movies.The webcam is really clear and I tested it with a video call on Skype. In lower light it tends to muddy and darken everything, but in a bright and well lit room everything seems to be fine and look as it should. I don't really ever video chat online, so webcams aren't too important on my list of things.The built is exceptionally well for plastic. I thought it would be aluminum like the Macbook air. (Come on...well all know this is a pretty obvious mac clone haha) I bring this with me in my backpack everywhere, and it seems to be fine and not scratching up at all. I don't use any type of sleeve or case besides the laptop section of my back pack.Battery life is decent, I can get maybe 3 hours of real usage out of it before I need to plug in the charger. Most laptops are advertised with an amazing battery life, but to actually achieve hours and hours, you'd have to have wifi off, your screen brightness super low, and not run any CPU intensive applications. Everyone's different with how they use a computer, so some might see decent battery life, others might see poor. Me? I'm happy with it, 3 hours is plenty for me, plus I always bring the charger just in case! If I am working with someone on my laptop though, I will have the charger plugged into it, even if I have several hours of battery life left.One neat thing about this laptop is the fact that all the ports are on the back. In recent years, manufactures have moved all the ports to the left and right sides of laptops, but Acer pushed them to the rear side like the good old days. This leaves the sides sleek and stylish, clean looking too. The only thing on the side though is the SD card slot, but it's so thin, you barely notice it.The touch pad is easy to slide your fingers across, it has no texture, meaning your fingers can slide and spin, like a skater in an ice ring. There are no separate left and right mouse buttons, but you can press down psychically on the touch pad on the bottom right and left corners to click. By default, you can also tap your finger anywhere on the touch pad to click.I don't really care for the power button being on the screen itself. It's kind of awkward to push in my opinion, and you have to apply some pressure to it. It's not hard to push; it just feels like an odd spot to have been placed honestly. I wouldn't consider this a negative feature though.It's a Macbook Air clone that runs windows, and it's made by Acer. Would I take a real Macbook Air over this? No. Remember, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." I highly recommend this laptop, even if you purchase the lower end models. It's beautiful, it's quick, it's portable, and it's amazing. I give it 5/5 stars!
Just got our newest addition for my arsenal of notebooks ranging from 10 inch alienware loaded notebook, Toshiba Dual screen Libretto to 17 inch Sony and 20 inch (should not be called a notebook) Dell notebook!I wanted a notebook that was fast, large enough drive to load up with our office and software development software. Something that I could take along with my 11 inch Macbook Air as we develop software for both Windows, Mac and IOS/Android.Did not want to carry a big bag for the notebooks but instead a slim bag and well....Everything fit's! Mind you we are using the Innergie mCube Pro 70 Watt Universal AC, Auto, and Air Adapter for Notebooks and Portable Devices (3 Year Warranty and Energy Star Certified) as the power adapter so that I have auto and plane power but also to cut down on the size of the adapter that comes with the Acer S3. Don't get me wrong this is not a large power adapter, but instead on the smaller size. But if I had my way I would find something smaller than the standard Macbook Air power adapter...As far as feel of the S3, awesome so say the least. Heat is minimal. Boot time is twice as fast as my Alienware 10 inch and opening the lid from sleep is really almost instant.As far as the other review about the wifi access. We are running the S3 on a network with a Apple Airport Extreme. No issues what so every and full power bars for the network signals.Love the 256GB SSD disk... Almost has me searching Amazon for replacement drives for all the other notebooks! So much improvement over speed.The touchpad on the S3 takes some getting used to as no separate left and right button but instead on the bottom of the touchpad.If there is one downfall, no backlit keyboard that I can find so far... If this is not the case and I have not found it yet, go ahead and comment how I find this to turn it on.... But on the other hand, I guess my wife will be happy knowing that the S3 wont sneak into the bedroom for a little "Before bed coding"!All round, impressed very impressed with the fit finish and performance of the S3 with i7, 256GB and 4GB.Updated 09/16/2012: The only issue that I have with the notebook is no Bluetooth and only 2 USB ports. This means that if you want to use a mouse such as the one I have Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse (Black) when out and about and Logitech M570 Wireless Trackball when in the office this means that only one port remaining which is fine for the external 500 GB Portable Hard Drive drive, but.... being in the financial industry, need a numerical keypad which means using a our Targus PAUK10U Ultra Mini USB Keypad, Black. This would have worked fine except for the fact that the usb power for the notebook would not run both the keypad and the USB drive.... not a happy camper.... Sorry but just went ahead and just purchased the preferred Samsung Series 9 NP900X4C-A03US 15-Inch Ultrabook (Ash Black).... Now for those of you that think a bluetooth toggle would work instead, sorry but been down that road and while our Microsoft Bluetooth keypad (sorry not available on amazon anymore) and Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 worked we had nothing but problems having the IOGEAR Bluetooth 4.0 USB Micro Adapter (GBU521) toggle to come alive when having the notebook come out of sleep mode.
We wanted a PC for my wife that was portable, light but still large enough for every day use. The viewing angles on the screen are just OK but as an ultralight 13 inch PC this is not an issue. The i7 processor is fast and the 256 GB SSHD is great. The Aspire meets all of her needs at a reasonable price. Also, I received the product quickly and in great shape.
So I bought this lap top in December 2011. I bought it for work (I travel and edit) its light design and power was too good of an offer to pass up.WELLout of the now 6 months of owning it It has been in the shop 4 times for the exact same problem.History of my ownershippurchased: December 8th 2011 (certified Acer store)SSD drive fail: Jan 17th 2012 (replaced and handed back turn around 3 business days)SSD drive fail: Feb 17th 2012 (replaced and handed back 3 business day turn around)SSD drive fail: April 18th 2012 (mailed to service center replaced shipped back received May 1st)SSD drive fail: May 1st (right out of box from fed ex office in Clients office to right back into box. reloaded UI/ Default... which did not work or me when I tried doing in the office? and returned may 8th)That is a some what typical story from this Acer line. They keep saying the problem is fixed because it leaves their shop working... I just got most of my software loaded back and I'm now nervous to even start work for fear its going to crash on me and I'm going to be back in the same boat as again.The SSD drive is garbage and all acer is going to do is replace it and send it back. When it breaks again... they will replace it and send it back.I have been reading up on other version of this lap top and have noticed the same thing happening.I would love to see everyone pull together to get a recall put out for this garbage.Over all don't buy this product. There are better and more stable/ reliable companies on the market.Also if you are calling acer technical support and want to speak to a human voice immediately (even thought it is outsourced and scripted) press the button for sales instead of tech support (normally option 2)
Bought this machine about three weeks ago for travel. My spouse took it for a trip to Europe.So far no complains.In fact it exceeds all expectations. It is very fast, it has no problems connecting to wireless. The screen is bright and crisp, the text is easy to read.Keyboard is fine - takes a little used to if you are switching from a bigger one, but works fine.Overall, seems sturdy and well done.Now the interesting part: I installed the latest version of Matlab on it (2012a) for some light use (figures for presentations etc...) To my complete surprise, it "benches" in the middle of Matlab's comparison chart, which is very good even for regular laptops.
