ASUS N53SV-EH71 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Silver Aluminum) Reviews
I bought this ASUS N53SV-EH71 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop when Amazon was selling it for around 690. I thought that was a very good price given that the laptop comes with a second-generation i7 processor, 6 GB of DDR3 RAM, a 7200rpm 500GB Hard Drive, Bang and Olufsen ICEpower co-developed built-in Sound Speakers, an NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M graphics card with 1GB DDR3 VRAM, 2 USB 2.0 ports, 1 USB 3.0 port, DVD?RW/CD-RW, 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet, and 802.11 b/g/n (@ 2.4GHz) , Bluetooth v3.0 WLAN, among other features. This laptop weighs around 6.5 pounds, looks attractive, and appears to be made of quality materials. The ON/OFF settings for the 2.0 megapixel Web Cam and WiFi are marked clearly, unlike those in other brand-name laptops I've had. It does come with a little bit of bloatware, but (I think) not as bad as those that came with other laptops I've bought. The laptop came pre-configured with two logical drives: C drive, around 185 GB, D drive around 255 GB, with the remaining storage going mostly to a recovery drive. The display was crisp, and the sound quality was really great -- not tinny at all like the sound quality in one of my other laptops. When I first received this laptop, I had to install and run a lot of software on it right away, so after about 8 hours of continuous operations, I was surprised the laptop stayed relatively cool!! Once the 6-cell battery is fully charged, I'm able to work on my laptop for around 4 hours before I have to recharge; I don't think this is outstanding, but it's still pretty good. The ac adapter is huge and fat, double the size of my other laptops' adapters -- something I'm not crazy about. But, overall, I do like this laptop!!
This machine is superb, my son uses it for gaming and thanks to it we've foregone the use of desktop computers. The price is one of the best aspects, providing great performance for a minimal price. The sound system is also great, so, that I use the built in speakers instead of external speakers. All the pros advertised are actually true, I'm rather comfortable with the purchase. I really recommend this laptop for anyone whose needs involve work, multimedia and gaming.
This machine is powerful, beautiful, and overall amazing! I'm a gamer and amateur graphic designer and I wanted a machine that was portable, powerful, and easy on the eyes. This machine was definitely worth the $690 while it was on sale which was quite convenient because I have had my eyes on this laptop.Size:The Laptop's size is a bit larger than 15.6' so I would recommend getting a larger case for it. I use what I believe is a 17' Swissgear bag and it fits perfectly!Appearance:The sleek aluminum finish is awesome and the overall shape is sweet! The only thing some what annoying is how around the screen the case a glossy plastic. I never touch the particular area but it tends to get scratched. Dirt or something? No idea.Screen:I can't say much other than it's clear and colorful! Despite the laptop being larger than other 15.6' laptops the screen is no larger if you were curious.Sound:The sound seems to be amazing! It's a great machine to hook up to a surround sound system to crank some tunes! The internal speakers are much powerful than others laptops I have used and the quality is great! The only downfall of the speakers are the lack of quality while running on Battery. You'll hear cracking in the audio from time to time.Hard Drive:The HD is large enough to hold quite a bit of material and it's certainly fast! I have plugged it full of games from my Steam Library and it seems to be running swell! From the first time you boot up you can visually see two different partitions of your hard drive, one which contains your operating system and your files and another which is specifically for backup. This is annoying if you're a gamer or if you have a lot of data on your computer. I filled it rather quickly and found myself having to use flash drives to dump pictures and other materials on.Camera:To be honest, I think the laptop Camera is terrible. It's 2.0 Megapixel's but that doesn't mean much. The camera is laggy. I have reinstalled the drivers multiple times and no luck. My friend has an inferior laptop but the camera on his is amazing compared to the one installed on this laptop. If you're looking to skype with friends and family be prepared to have to purchase and additional webcam. It's junk!Gaming. If you're interested in what it can handle it runs games older games to fairly recent titles great! Personally I'm a Team Fortress 2 and Counter Strike: Source type of PC gamer. The two games run steadily at 60 FPS at all times! I also use Fraps to record gameplay and surprisingly it had little affect on my framerate! I have also played games like Lost Planet Extreme Condition and Gears of War and have to say they run fairly well at highest settings. The only thing that bogs those particular games down are the particles. Gears of War's framerate at Max settings constantly runs at a constant of around 50 or 60 though tends to lower towards the 20's to 30's upon reaching the Act where it's down pouring and lambent wretches are introduced in combat. Lost Planet is similar since it has a constant flow of snow while outside and it tends to lower framerates. The framerate never becomes 'unplayable' on Max though it's to take into consideration if you're one of many who wants to run a game like Crysis on Ultra High at an absurd resolution. You will be golden if you play such games on high graphics. Leave off the AA and you should be good to go but his laptop can endure quite a bit so feel free to experiment!Nvidia Optimus Technology:Sure, this technology is a great way to save energy but for certain it complicates you if you game.It drives me nuts that I have to go in and manually set it so my games run using the Nvidia card. Not only is it annoying it's tedious work having to manually bypass settings to allow certain applications to use the Nvidia card. God, I played around for hours to get this computer to run Half-Life 1! I had to download a program called Nvidia Inspector and force allow the Nvidia application to allow usage of the card on the game. Pain...Resolution:The resolution of this machine is reasonable. 1366x768 isn't a bad resolution but isn't for those whom need the room for applications. I use Photoshop and other programs quite often and I have began to notice how insufficient the space is for the work I do. It could be better but it's not terrible.Temperature:The temperature of this laptop's GPU while gaming is great! The average temperature being 42 degrees Celsius idle to the highest of 72 while under full load. From what I know about Laptop GPU's the temperatures I'm getting are great!Graphic Design:Carrying on, as I said, I'm an amateur graphic designer. I tend to use PhotoShop CS5 for all kinds of miscellaneous things. This computer seems to handle the majority of what I do in Photoshop. Which is great!Cons:Now you know what? This computer is great though it has a minor problem, it tends to freeze! Simple as that! It tends to get rather annoying because my computer locks up while I explore my pictures library. It's rather tedious and aggravating being someone who loves to take pictures! I suppose that's my reason for deducting a star. I think I can work around it by viewing my images with a different viewer but it'll most likely only be a temporary fix. The specific error I encounter has to do with the Display not responding causing my computer to recover. Stupid.Asus Support... Have a question? Have a problem? It's highly unlikely they will help.Months after sending emails support got back to me requesting for me to send in my machine so I could have my keyboard replaced. I'm sorry but as a student who's going to school for a major in computer technology and has a background in tampering with the contents within a computer I find it there no reason for them not to send the keyboard itself to me. I have removed the keyboard myself to clean the contents from within it with ease so without a doubt I could replace the entire thing. I don't believe they after got back to me over whether or not they could help me with my hardware issues! Come on Asus! Get your act together!Over the past few months my laptop's keyboard has worn down significantly. I have used my computer daily since I received it. As of this point a number of my keys have worn to the point where they shine and the texture of them has worn dull. It's quite sad to see the quality of it's so poor.Current Thoughts:Honestly this computer is my baby. It can handle what I throw at it and it only has a few problems that can easily be ignored. If you're interested after reading this review and are still interested in an Asus laptop I would recommend to go after one of their newer models. You'll surely be happier because it's inevitable that all the kinks will have been worked out! I still think this computer was a steal for how much I had paid but I wouldn't recommend paying anymore for it!Note:Thanks for reading. Honestly I rarely write up a review so this review is most likely mediocre at best. I hope it helps, and I'll be sure to update this if anything changes!
It's unfortunate that they moved the price up to $940. It was $690 when I ordered it and was an awesome deal at that price. I didn't look at too many laptops in the $900 range, but it's probably still a reasonably good deal at that price. The system runs current games smoothly on "high" settings, and games over a year old run smoothly on the highest settings. So this won't cut it for a die-hard gamer, but it's great for casual gaming.I quickly upgraded the ram to the 16GB max with 2 of these Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600 Memory Module (CT2KIT51264BC1339) (totaling 4 sticks of 4GB). Swapping out the ram took all of 2 minutes. I work from home online and often have several programs running and over 100 tabs open in my web browser. So having enough memory to run smoothly for hours with a heavy load without having to reboot is awesome.NOTE: Amazon's specs lack detail here. They should point out that the ram is PC3-10600. A lot of laptops in the <$700 range only come with the slower PC3-8500 ram.The speakers on this thing are way better than my last two laptops. It puts out better sound at 25% than they did at 100% volume. The wireless adapter in my last laptop (a Lenovo Thinkpad) had all kinds of trouble staying connected to wireless networks. So far I haven't had any such trouble with the adapter in the ASUS. Range, speed and reliability are all good. The battery life is good so far and the bottom doesn't get as hot as other laptops I've had. So mobility is good, though I do prefer 14" laptops over 15".My one real gripe is the keyboard. It has a totally different feel from other keyboards I've used for some reason and it's taking me forever to get accustomed to it. Since I type for 4+ hours every day this is a bit of a hassle for me (slows me down several words per minute), but I'll deal with it because this was such a good deal in every other way.Update: was checking the current pricing for a friend and saw some negative reviews due to freezing. After owning this for six months I can't remember it freezing even once. Currently the laptop has been running for 10 days (240 hours) straight with no signs of slowing down. I routinely run it hard for 1 - 2 weeks at a time like this. So I don't think freezing is an issue with this system.
The quality of this laptop far surpasses its price. In addition to having great specs, this laptop is also really well-built. The fans are silent and efficient. The laptop barely gets warm even under during gaming. The laptop chassis is solid and compact. Th brushed aluminum cover is elegant and does not suffer from fingerprint build-up.Unlike the earlier version which I returned (n53sv-xe1), EH71 does not have its predecessor's disappointing keyboard flexes. The screen is vivid and bright, but the viewing angle can be a bit better. My only complaint at the moment is the huge, easily scratched plastic screen bezel. I decided not to go with the high resolution model because the text gets a bit too small. Also, I was amazed at the battery life of this laptop. Using power-saving mode, this laptop lasted 5-6 hours.
I used to build systems and I always preferred ASUS motherboards. I have been through several laptops and wanted to get an ASUS this time based on my past experience with them. So far I am really impressed with the quality and performance of this laptop. I do a lot of video/photo work and this laptop is like having the horsepower of a desktop on my lap. The battery life is great too. I've used it almost daily for a month now and I love it. Also, Amazon has been great to do business with. I highly recommend this laptop and it's been a pleasure dealing with Amazon.
