Lenovo Ideapad Y570 08626KU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Dusk Black) Reviews

    1. I'm both a manager, developer, and a hobby gamer. I needed a laptop that could take me playing a few hours of video games, or could allow me to sit through meetings and type up my notes. This laptop has covered both of those perfectly. If you check out comparison sites for its graphics card, you will see that it has about a midrange card (the 555M, that is). This can play Skyrim at high (but not ultra) settings at about 30 FPS (so it may lag a little bit compared to a high-end card, but I haven't had that issue). In addition, it has this little switch in the front. When you flick it, it will switch between modes. The first default mode utilizes the integrated Intel 3000 card, and tweaks settings in order to conserve battery power. When you flick it again, a little white light will come on. This turns on the nVidia 555M, brightens your screen a bit, and tweaks settings to prefer power over battery life.I personally installed a fresh copy of windows on the SSD in order to remove some of the bloatware crap that all manufactured computers came with (this one had some sort of McAffee crap on there - gone!). You have to go through some of Lenovo's manufactured stuff to do this, which is pretty simple, actually. If you do a quick search for "Reinstall windows on Lenovo rapiddrive" you should be able to get Lenovo's actual page that describes how to reinstall Windows onto the SSD. When you reinstall it, if you do it correctly, it even preserves a backup of the drivers that you need for everything from the Energy Management software, to graphics, wireless, USB 3.0 drivers, even Lenovo's theatre and facial recognition applications.Definitely worth the money. I paid $900 for this at Fry's, and I absolutely love it. The only con I have found is that it's a pain to find a laptop sleeve that will fit a 15.6" properly.

    2. This laptop runs great. It runs all the current games except for one flaw, as mentioned in another review, the laptop overheats quickly unless you set the CPU speed to 85%. No big deal to me though, most games run at max settings anyway. My biggest issue is with the hinges. I treat my laptop so nicely, and this problem still arose. After a few weeks whenever I open the laptop it started making this clicking sound, and is still doing it a couple months later, then when the laptop is open the hinges are very loose, and the screen falls back on its own due to this if it's at too much of an angle. All in all, this is a good purchase, especially for the price, and my hinge problem may be just my own.

    3. Arrived from Amazon in quick order. I was surprised how easy it was to set up transferred programs and hardware. The keyboard is actually "pleasant" to use.....very nice touch!! Very pleased with purchase.

    4. I purchased the Y570 primarily for business travel and presentation use and have started using it recently as a notebook workstation. I have been pleased in its performance in both uses. The keys offer more space than I had gotten used to over the years on laptops but it didn't take long to get used to the wider keyboard. The built in "number pad" does come in handy in fact I've come to depend on it.I do wish the industry would standardize keyboard "delete" buttons and such. In this case the "delete" button is in the same row as the "F-key" row, right after "Insert". I keep having to look for it before using.I love software that keeps my computer tidy and memory available without me having to do it and especially so that I don't ever experience slowdowns due to high fragmentation and poor memory management. But I hate "bloatware" and this computer comes with a bundle of it. In fact, one of them kept popping up a tax prepared service advertisement about every 5 minutes until I figured out which program that was causing the problem and killed it. I feel sorry for folks that didn't get a masters degree in computer science or are not an advanced computer hobbyiest as I suspect these folks just have to put up with things like that which totally takes away from the fun-factor of the computing and online experience.Last, I don't know what is causing the following problem. I'll be typing along minding my own business when all of a sudden it appears that the "Control" function is stuck "on". The control key itself is not stuck but the functionality is. Rendering the ability to type any letters to "null". The only remedy I've found (after learning nothing after reading the manual and Google searching the Internet) is to reboot the computer. I have not been able to determine what puts the computer in this "Control-stuck" mode, so I haven't figured out how to resolve it without a reboot. I don't know if this is a problem with the computer or with the operator (me). But I hate this problem. So why you ask do I give it 5 instead of 4 stars? Because bloatware is common with most manufacturers so nothing unique to this model, also the non-standardization of notebook keyboard layouts is not unique nor the responsibility of a single manufacturer, and finally the stuck "Control" function incidents may be my lame off-key finger-landing combination of some sort, although I must disclose that I've never had this problem with any other keyboard in my 30+ years of using computers. However that said, I will revise my review and downgrade it to a 4 star if I find that indeed its a unique issue to this model number.

    5. This laptop is amazing for the price. Have been using it for over 3 months now, and i have to say of all the computers i ever had, it is really nice to have an inexpensive laptop that can run just about any game. No problems with any hardware so far at all.
