Bought the laptop for work & personal use but after only an hour (seriously) of using it it shut off and would not load back up. Was on phone with Dell for 45 minutes and after trying all their suggestions they could do nothing but say it has internal hardware issues (i.e.piece of junk) and I should return it which I did and got my money back, atleast!I then decided to buy an Inspiron 15r directly from dell for $140 more and that one lasted 1 day before it did the same thing!! Although this time I was online with Dell for over an hour, and they said I needed to send it back but because of my bad experience with the two they would upgrade me to a Studio 1558 with faster processor and better hardware and some extra features ($1100.00 value) at no charge. I love this one!!!
Been a month since I got this computer. No problems whatsoever. Nice laptop, great keypad (with the numpad on it). I'd recommend it. I got a good deal ($680) on Amazon.
It was shipped fast and at this point it has been perfect. I felt like it was a good value and a great product and i still feel that way..
Overall this is a nice computer...very zippy, very light, easy to set up. Haven't had it long enough to comment on the longevity of it, but I HATE THE KEYBOARD. Seriously, I don't know who thought that having the number pad was worth making the keyboard hard to type on - the way it lines up with the wrist rest and touch pad is VERY awkward and the idea of having to live with this for the next few years has me considering returning the computer. I already am feeling twinges in my left hand/wrist from having it hang off the side a bit and no matter how much I like the rest of the computer, NO computer is worth risking carpal tunnel. If anyone knows of an i5 processor without the extended computer and wants to put link in comments, I would be most grateful
I have had this laptop for about three weeks now. Here are my pros & cons:Pros:- Fast processor. My most processor intensive application is Adobe Lightroom 3 and this processor along with 4 gigs of ram make easy work of photo editing.- Screen - The resolution of the screen is incredible. A big improvement over my previous laptop.- Price - I shopped for weeks looking for a machine with a good combination of features. I wanted an i5 processor, 4 gigs of RAM, HDMI port, etc. This machine had all of the features at the best price point.- Track pad - The track pad is nicely sensitive, has a good tactile feel and works great.- Construction - The machine seems to have a solid build.- Windows 7 - This isn't directly about just this machine but Windows 7 is great. I was able to set it up on my home network easily and it easily connected to our shared printer (something that was a task with Windows XP)Cons -- The lid and palm area do show fingerprints. It is not as bad as some others but I hate fingerprints on my computer.- Offset keyboard - This keyboard has a number pad so the letter keys are naturally offset to the left. I will probably get used to this but it is taking some adjustment.A note about the Mars Black color - Mars black is sort of a brushed metal black. Mine is actually more of a brushed metal dark gray than black. The brushed metal is an appearance, the actual finish is shiny and smooth.I do like the computer and would buy it again although I would give very serious consideration to a 14 inch display instead of the 15.6.
I just got this Inspiron 15R in the mail today and it is amazing. The specs were as listed. 450m i5 processor, 4gb of ram, 320gb hdd. I ordered this two days ago for the price of $679.99. The price has now been raised to $849.99. I searched around the internet for awhile to find a deal on an i5 processor. My old laptop was an inspiron 1501. The 15R is a great improvement. One of my features is the touch pad. While not perfect, the touch pad has similar capabilities to one of a Macbook. You can zoom in and out of any webpage also do a 2 finger scroll. While this touch pad isn't perfect, I personally find it better than one of a Macbook. When using macbooks in the past, I would always accidentally zoom in or out of a page when i didn't want to. On the 15R the touch pad does exactly what I want it to do, when i want it to do.This computer is also fast. I'm so happy that I didn't settle for an i3 processor. For example, when I was first setting everything up, I was downloading itunes, while updating McAfee, and while installing Microsoft office from a disk (i used my old microsoft office 2007 disk). The intel i5 450m was able to perform all 3 of these task without any struggle. Finally I'll give you guys the windows experience ratingsProcessor: 6.8Memory (RAM): 5.9Graphics: 4.7Gaming Graphics 5.1Disk data transfer rate 5.8These scores aren't bad at all. The graphics score is from the Intel HD graphics. I'm assuming most people who just settle for the intel hd graphics integrated into the core processors will have a similar score. The only thing I wish this computer had was a hard drive that spun at 7200 rpm instead of 5400, but for the price I was able to get this 15R with the i5, I really can't complain.I got this at a great deal, but since the price has now been raised to 849.99 I suggest shopping around for a little bit to try to find a cheaper laptop with an i5 processor.
